Gadolinium oxide safety & handling

Current SDS example: Thermo Fisher’s U.S. SDS revised 22 December 2025 classifies its gadolinium oxide product as causing serious eye irritation (Category 2). Classifications can vary by jurisdiction, formulation and revision, so always use the SDS supplied with your material.

Primary practical risks for powder handling

  • Avoid generating or inhaling airborne dust.
  • Prevent eye contact; use suitable eye protection where dust or splashes are possible.
  • Use gloves and protective clothing appropriate to the task and local risk assessment.
  • Provide local exhaust or other engineering controls for dust-generating operations.
  • Wash hands after handling and before eating, drinking or smoking.

Storage

Store in a tightly closed, correctly labeled container in a dry area, segregated according to the SDS and your facility chemical-management rules. For high-purity material, contamination control may be as important as chemical stability.

Spill response

Avoid dry sweeping that creates dust. Follow the SDS, facility procedure and local environmental rules. Suitable HEPA-filtered collection or carefully controlled wet methods may be appropriate depending on scale and equipment.

Medical-use misconception

Gadolinium is familiar because of gadolinium-based MRI contrast agents. Industrial Gd₂O₃ powder is not an injectable contrast agent. Even research nanoparticles require engineered coatings, biological testing and regulatory controls.

Transportation and regulatory status

Do not infer shipping classification from a generic web page. Use the current SDS and shipping regulations for the specific product, concentration, package, origin and destination. Supplier SDS Section 14 is the starting point, but shipper responsibilities remain jurisdiction-specific.
